BRIEF: Elementary student carries the load for fundraiser in Johnsonville

Mar 29, 2012 (The Weekly Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- JOHNSONVILLE, S.C. -- Over the past 30 years, students from across the country have helped support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through the creative fund raising of its "Math-a-Thon." Within that stretch of time, Johnsonville Elementary School has been one of the schools that has participated in the fundraiser with hundreds of students participating every year. In 2012, though, one student stood out.

With the 2012 donations, the school raised $1684.77 overall, but Grier McKnight, a 5-year-old kindergarten in Jackie Burrows class raised more nearly more than one-quarter of that with his $425 in donations.

The Math-a-Thon is a curriculum based fund raiser that entices the children raising the money to solicit donations for every math problem they solve in the supplied booklet.

Having raised more than $1,000, the school is now eligible to be registered in a drawing for a chance to send one student to the taping of a television show on the Nickelodeon children's cable network.
