Chance of storms for Enid, area rises this evening

ENID, Apr 09, 2012 (Enid News & Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Area residents should be prepared for severe weather this evening, said Enid and Garfield County Emergency Management Director Mike Honigsberg.

"As most are aware there is a threat for severe weather," Honigsberg said in an advisory email this afternoon. "We have a front to the north that is just creeping this way. There is a low pressure system out west and a very weak dryline right now. There is a lot of instability with all of this." Honigsberg said storms are not expected in our area until 8 tonight or later.

"I would say that if storms occur, expect strong winds, hail, and torrential rainfall," Honigsberg said.

Honigsberg advised area residents to make preparations for severe weather, not just for today, but for the coming week and remainder of the severe weather season.

"This week looks like the potential is definitely here, so make the proper preparations for you and yours," Honigsberg said. "This way you know what to do when it happens." Severe weather alerts for Enid and Garfield County are available through the NIXLE system, which sends alerts by text message to cellular telephones. To sign up for NIXLE alerts text your ZIP code to 888777 and follow the directions.

Up-to-date severe weather information also is available through social media by "friending" Honigsberg on Facebook or "liking" the Enid/Garfield County Emergency Management page on Facebook.

Honigsberg also advised area residents to stay tuned to local FM radio stations in the event of approaching severe weather.
