solution created specifically for early learners. The goal of the Hatch
iStartSmart Mobile Pilot Program is to allow early education
programs to evaluate the effectiveness of mobile technology in a
controlled implementation, as well as to raise awareness of best
practices for implementation of technology in early learning
environments.

WHY:
|
|
The surge in acquisition of mobile tablets for early learning
classrooms is creating an environment where the technology is
often being used without measurable outcomes. For young children,
the inappropriate use of tablet technology can result in sensory
overload and confusion. Children ages three to eight can benefit
from the integration of instructional technology in the classroom,
but are best served by technology that includes applications and
content to develop school readiness and is created with critical
developmental stages in mind.
A recent position
statement issued by the National
Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and
the Fred
Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media on the
role of technology in early learning stated that technology can
complement classroom instruction but stressed the importance of
choosing research-based, age-appropriate technology focused on
individual learning goals for young children. The Hatch
Mobile Pilot Program will help demonstrate how tablet
technology can complement classroom instruction with
research-based applications to teach early math and literacy
skills in an individualized, intentional learning environment.
