Phaseout STO Semanggi 2: Strengthen Infrastructure Towards True Meaningful Broadband
(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 04 May 2012 Release date- 30042012 - Jakarta, - Located at Sentral Telepon Otomat (STO) Semanggi 2 Jakarta, today (30/4/2012) PT. Telekomunikasi Indonesia, Tbk (Telkom) officially phase out copper cable telecommunication access during which have served subscribers' telecommunication need at the Golden Triangle area: Sudirman, Thamrin and Kuningan.
This program is one of the most fundamental changes towards infrastructure transformation through copper cable network modernization.
The phase out marks an implementation of an end 2 end next generation network (NGN) starting from internet protocol (IP) core to access network massively. The phase out is made by the replacement of Indonesia's central digital telephone with soft switch and the replacement of copper cable network with optical fiber cable network.
President Director Telkom, Rinaldi Firmansyah, explains that this program marks the change of telecommunication technology from analog to IP-based technology. 'Telkom stops permanently copper cable telecommunication access network is a strategic step towards national information & communication technology (ICT) network based on IP and optical network which is a backbone of formation of next generation nationwide broadband network (NG-NBN),' says Rinaldi.
'Need of bandwith nowadays is getting larger in line with the growth of content, video and data application supported by user generated content,' says Rinaldi. Accoding to him, copper access network now only able to distribute to maximum 4Mbps, so it is necessary to be modernized in order to be able distribute bandwidth to 100Mbps using a technology based on multi service access node (MSAN) & giga bite passive optical network (GPON).
In line with the Master Plan for Expansion and Acceleration of Indonesia's Economic Development (MP3EI) program, in which Telkom becomes one of the BUMN supporting implementation of true meaningful broadband development able to provide bandwidth 20 - 100 mega bit per second (Mbps) per subscriber, and has an initiative to make a modernization program for access network and development of IPCore network.
Telkom since 2011 has launched modernization program for access network at 360,000 line units of service at 8 STO in two big cities in Indonesia, those are, Jakarta and Surabaya. For Jakarta area, the modernization is made in STO Cengkareng, Gandaria, Kebayoran Baru, Semanggi1, Slipi, Rawamangun and Kelapa Gading, and for Surabaya area covering STO Injoko and Manyar.
In 2012, Telkom continues the modernization program for access network with the target at 2.4 millions of line units of service at 66 STO in Jakarta, Bandung, Cirebon, Pekalongan, Purwokerto, Semarang, Solo, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Bandarlampung, Medan, Padang, Palembang and Pekanbaru. Up to 2015 modernization program for access network has a target at 13 millions of line units with true broadband capability.
Optical fiber installation is made nationwide from east to west of the Indonesian Islands along 23,713 km covering 345 districts or around 69% nationwide with a 100% target in 2016. Total capacity of bandwidth in optical backbone reaching 1.78 tera bite per second (Tbps ) supported by metro ethernet for regional aggregation at 1006 node metro all over Indonesia.
To support an increase of bandwidth as Speedy and Internet corporate service, we have prepared a capacity of bandwidth gateway Internet at 123 giga bite per second (Gbps), by the support of infrastructure of content delivery network (CDN) such as Google, Youtube, Akamai at 82 Gbps in Jakarta, Batam and Surabaya and also domestic peering at 32 Gbps.
