Ferrer loses to Federer at ATP World Tour Finals

London, Nov 8, 2012 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Spaniard David Ferrer's record at the ATP World Tour Finals fell to 1-1 after he lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) Thursday to Roger Federer in round-robin play.

Ferrer, who brought an 11-match winning streak into the contest, including a three-set victory Tuesday over Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro, put pressure on Federer's serve and earned 10 break points throughout the match in London's O2 Arena.

But his poor conversion rate on those break chances - one for 10 - proved costly.

The Swiss great was unable to break the Spaniard's serve in the second set, but he won the big points in the tiebreaker to run his career record over Ferrer to 14-0.

"Credit to him for being a great return player, getting back a lot of good returns on good serves," Federer said in the post-match press conference.

"That makes you go for the extra special serve, and then you start missing by a little bit. Today, I had to use everything I had in terms of variation, kicking it, sliding it, going all different ways." "It was a good match (and) I'm happy with my game. I had a lot of chance to break his serve. When he had one break point, he made it. Sometimes with these players, if I don't take my chances, I don't win the important points (and) it is very difficult to win," Ferrer said.

With the victory, Federer has won his first two round-robin matches and secured a berth in the semifinals, while Ferrer's fate will depend on the final Group B matches on Saturday.

Thursday's night match in Group B pits Del Potro against Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic.

The eight-man ATP World Tour Finals, also known as the year-end championships, is the biggest tournament on the men's tennis calendar after the four Grand Slams. EFE gx/mc
