U.S. Patents Awarded to Inventors in Maryland (Jan. 17)
(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Targeted News Service Targeted News Service ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 17 -- The following federal patents were awarded to inventors in Maryland.
*** Hughes Network Systems Assigned Patent ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 17 -- Hughes Network Systems, Germantown, Md., has been assigned a patent (8,355,462) developed by Bassel Beidas, Alexandria, Va., Stan Kay, Rockville, Md., and Neal Becker, Frederick, Md., for a "system and method for combined predistortion and interference cancellation in a satellite communications system." The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "The present invention provides a communication system for use with a first source signal and a second source signal. The first source signal is on a first channel and includes M symbols, where M is an integer greater than 1. The second source signal is on a second channel and includes X symbols, where X is an integer greater than 1. The first channel is different from the second channel. The communication system includes a first modulator unit, a second modulator unit and an adder. The first modulator unit can generate a first modulated signal based on the first source signal and includes a first inter-symbol distortion estimating unit and a first stage predistortion unit. The second modulator unit can generate a second modulated signal based on the second source signal and includes a second inter-symbol distortion estimating unit and a predistortion unit. The adder can generate an added signal based on the first modulated signal and the second modulated signal. The first inter-symbol distortion estimating unit can generate a distorted symbol vector based on an estimate of a distortion of the first through (a-1)-th symbols and an estimate of a distortion of the (a+1)-th through M-th symbols, where 1.ltoreq.a.ltoreq.M. The first stage predistortion unit is operable to generate a predistorted symbol a based on the symbol a of the first plurality of symbols and the distorted symbol vector. Further, a receiver unit can cancel interference in the received signals to account for adjacent channel interference." The patent application was filed on Oct. 29, 2009 (12/608,430). *** LSI Assigned Patent ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 17 -- LSI, Milpitas, Calif., has been assigned a patent (8,355,457) developed by Ran Katzur, N. Potomac, Md., for a "correction-calculation algorithm for estimation of the signal to noise ratio in high bit rate DMT modulation." The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A method for correcting signals received on a channel. Signals are received along the channel and it is determined how many of the signals are outside a predetermined range relative to a plurality of predetermined constellation points (i.e., erasures). Then, the noise power is estimated the noise power based on the number erasures, and the noise power is used to correct the signals. Specifically, the estimated noise power can be used to correct the signals which have been determined to be outside the predetermined range and which have been determined to contain a large error component (i.e., based on distance from the closest constellation point). A look up table can be used to determine the correction to be applied, and a separate look up table can be used for each tone." The patent application was filed on Oct. 26, 2004 (10/973,585). *** Cisco Technology Assigned Patent for Key Transport in Authentication or Cryptography ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 17 -- Cisco Technology, San Jose, Calif., has been assigned a patent (8,356,177) developed by David A. McGrew, Poolesville, Md., Brian E. Weis, San Jose, Calif., and Fabio R. Maino, Palo Alto, Calif., for a "key transport in authentication or cryptography." The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A computer system for authenticating, encrypting, and transmitting a secret communication, where the encryption key is transmitted along with the encrypted message, is disclosed. In an embodiment, a first transmitting processor encrypts a plaintext message to a ciphertext message using a data key, encrypts the data key using a key encrypting key, and sends a communication comprising the encrypted data key and the ciphertext message. A second receiving processor receives the communication and then decrypts the encrypted data key using the key encrypting key and decrypts the ciphertext message using the data key to recover the plaintext message." The patent application was filed on Oct. 22, 2009 (12/604,221). The full-text of the patent can be found at

*** NASA Assigned Patent ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 17 -- NASA has been assigned a patent (8,355,579) developed by five co-inventors for an "automatic extraction of planetary image features." The co-inventors are Jacqueline J. LeMoigne-Stewart, Bowie, Md., Giulia Troglio, Genoa, Italy, Jon A. Benediktsson, Reykjavik, Iceland, Sebastiano B. Serpico, Genoa, Italy, and Gabriele Moser, Varazze, Italy.
The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A method for the extraction of Lunar data and/or planetary features is provided. The feature extraction method can include one or more image processing techniques, including, but not limited to, a watershed segmentation and/or the generalized Hough Transform. According to some embodiments, the feature extraction method can include extracting features, such as, small rocks. According to some embodiments, small rocks can be extracted by applying a watershed segmentation algorithm to the Canny gradient. According to some embodiments, applying a watershed segmentation algorithm to the Canny gradient can allow regions that appear as close contours in the gradient to be segmented." The patent application was filed on May 19, 2010 (12/783,054). The full-text of the patent can be found at

*** NSA Assigned Patent ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 17 -- The U.S. National Security Agency has been assigned a patent (8,355,501) developed by Donald W. Newhart, Elkridge, Md., for a "method of collision-free hashing for near-match inputs." The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A method of collision-free hashing of near-match by selecting bit positions d that differ between a first input and a second input, selecting a degree of a first polynomial for a cyclic code proportional to d, selecting a bit length i of the first input and the second input, selecting a bit length cv of a check value greater than or equal to d, setting n>=i+cv, generating the first polynomial that divides x.sup.n+1, factoring the first polynomial into a second and a third polynomials, receiving the first input, dividing the first input by the second polynomial, dividing the first input by the third polynomial, and identifying the results of the last two steps as a hash of the first input."
