WebNMS Carrier Ethernet OAM Solution Reduces Operating Expenses for Service Providers

WebNMS is a telecom software division of Zoho (News - Alert) Corporation, a provider of network management solutions. The WebNMS Framework has become the preferred Element Management System (EMS) and Network Management System (NMS) framework provider with deployments in every Tier 1 Carrier in the world. Because of the flexibility in the WebNMS framework, network equipment providers can quickly and easily deploy high performance, high availability EMS solutions for multiple domains, including optical, Ethernet, cable, LTE (News - Alert), wireless access, mobile backhaul VoIP, MPLS, media platforms and cloud infrastructures.

Operation, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) is a set of functions designed to monitor network operation, detect network faults and measure network performance. As Ethernet evolves from enterprise-level LANs to carrier-class networks and services, it requires automated end-to-end management and monitoring by service providers. As a result, Ethernet is the most recent communications protocol to adopt OAM capabilities, such as connectivity verification, fault detection, performance monitoring and alarm indication.

WebNMS recently launched its high-performance Carrier Ethernet OAM solution, which combines multivendor support with a state-of-the-art feature set to drive operating expense (OPEX (News - Alert)) reductions for service providers managing Carrier Ethernet equipment from a single vendor or from multiple vendors.

To maintain service continuity and reduce OPEX in multivendor Carrier Ethernet environments, service providers need to control, measure and report Ethernet service in a standard way, across all services and all vendors’ devices. Not every vendor, however, uses the MEF (News - Alert)-Ethernet management model or standard MIBs, opting instead to implement custom RFCs and commands. The resulting fragmentation sticks service providers with multiple management consoles and systems integrations.

The new WebNMS Carrier Ethernet OAM solution creates a single console for multivendor environments and delivers shorter time-to-market for new services, end-to-end service performance monitoring and a more cost-effective, scalable and resilient infrastructure for data and voice services.

“We’ve engineered the WebNMS Carrier Ethernet OAM solution to directly address the management challenge service providers face,” said Eric Wegner, business development manager, WebNMS, in a statement. “Our solution provides a console from which service providers can manage all of their Carrier Ethernet equipment. As a result, our users gain a unified system of their networks to enable informed, proactive management and swift problem resolution that effectively runs their operations.”

Available immediately, the WebNMS Carrier Ethernet OAM solution employs pre-built MEF object models to support standards-based equipment and the extensible WebNMS object model, which can be mapped to support custom equipment. Built on top of the WebNMS Framework, the WebNMS Carrier Ethernet OAM solution features a distributed architecture and integration with OSS systems to deliver a highly scalable, highly available and cost-effective solution.

The WebNMS Carrier Ethernet OAM solution gives service providers better control over their networks with flow-through automation, real-time quality of service (QoS) performance and bandwidth monitoring that accelerate time-to-market and ensure customer Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are met.

The new solution includes auto-discovery, provisioning, class of service (CoS), performance, fault management and northbound OSS integration. It automatically discovers switches, ports and E-line/E-Lan services, and logical elements like services, UNIs, endpoints and profiles are also captured by the discovery filter.

The user interface enables point-and-click provisioning of Ethernet services and OAM profiles. Bandwidth profile, performance profile, an RFC2544 profile and CFM profile can be added, and the same can be associated to endpoints of a service. Flows allow for testing of throughput, latency and jitter. The network can be engineered for different traffic priorities. Point-and-click configuration, activation and monitoring of RFC2544 tests as well as threshold definitions and notification reception are supported.

Monitoring and health checking include real-time reporting on service and network performance metrics, port and EVC utilization, transmission errors, and QoS thresholds. Historical reporting can be viewed, exported or sent to an OSS interface. KPI dashboards, graphs and charts display attributes like delay, frame loss, jitter and availability.

Carrier Ethernet traps from multiple vendors such as RFC2544FdAlarm and RFC2544JitterAlarm are parsed and correlated into meaningful events and alarms. Ethernet devices that do not implement SNMP can also be configured and monitored via CLI commands.

WebNMS also offers solutions for machine to machine (M2M), cloud management, military application, MPLS monitoring, application monitoring, syslog monitoring and mediation. To learn more, click here.
