Freescale Semiconductor Starts Shipping i.MX 6 Series Applications Processors

Freescale Semiconductor (News - Alert) has announced that the company has started the production of i.MX 6 series. According to the company, this new series brings together excellent performance with enhanced power consumption and unmatched scalability.

Offering single-, dual- and quad-core families based on the ARM (News - Alert) Cortex-A9 architecture, the i.MX 6 series introduces the industry’s first truly scalable multicore platform. i.MX 6 series offers the perfect platform to create a portfolio of end devices based on a single hardware design, along with a dependable ecosystem.

The series consists of five devices: the single-core i.MX 6Solo and i.MX 6SoloLite, dual-core i.MX 6Dual and i.MX 6DualLite, and quad-core i.MX 6Quad applications processors. Offering software, power and pin compatibility across single-, dual- and quad-core deployments, these products represent the industry’s only ARM-based applications processor series together.

To power a broad variety of highly innovative products across applications, i.MX 6 series applications processors have been selected. Along with eReaders, market-specific media tablets and more, this includes automotive infotainment systems, display-based industrial equipment, IPTV (News - Alert) solutions, and medical equipment.

“The i.MX 6 series is distinguished by the sheer breadth of the offering, in terms of scalability, price/performance ratios, and the flexibility to support multiple applications,” said Geoff Lees, senior vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Microcontroller Group. “Its broad adoption across many different vertical segments, combined with strong ecosystem support, makes it the platform of choice for years to come.”

Recently, the company unveiled the VortiQa Platform Services Package (PSP), which the company states will speed the development of embedded software for Freescale's multicore QorIQ and QorIQ Qonverge products. By minimizing bare-metal coding tasks and shifting more application development to the familiar Linux user space, VortiQa PSP streamlines development. Allowing for faster, higher quality and more cost-efficient applications, this expands the pool of qualified software candidates.
